ACWA's Achievements

The Aquaculture Council of Western Australia (ACWA) was incorporated in 1987 to assist this emerging industry overcome its impediments, by working in partnership with government and WA community to bring fruition the potential of this regionally based, sustainable industry.   Presently, the ACWA membership represents over 80% of the existing and 80% of the prospective aquaculture in Western Australia and is the State most influential voice on aquaculture matters.

Over the past 17 years ACWA has cleared many of the obstacles that faced the Western Australian aquaculture industry as summary of ACWA's key achievements is provided below:

Highlights of 2008/2009

Members of ACWA achieved milestones with the expansion of their operations Midwest and Kimberley regions, the expansion of abalone production on the south coast .

 ACWA activities contributed to;

  • A commitment by Government to reform aquaculture laws in Western Australia
  • A commitment by the Government to streamlining environmental approval processes by December 2009;
  • The securing over $1 million of funding for an indigenous aquaculture business in Collie, using rehabilitated mine void water;
  • Two successful member sundowners showcasing ACWA members' fine aquaculture produce.
  • Assisted members in securing over $500,000 in government grants.
