ACWA Committee of Management Profile

ACWA is a not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to the promotion and the development of the aquaculture industry.  The implementation and management of the business plan are vested in the Committee of Management consisting of nine persons; a chairman, vice-chairman and seven committee members.  All are elected by ACWA members at its annual general meeting. The day to day management of ACWA's business programs is supported by the employment of an Executive Officer.

Experience and Special Responsibilities

 

Max Ball

Independent Chairman

Following a career in the Australian Army, Max has been involved in the fishing and food processing industries since 1985.  During this time he has served on several industry organisations at the State and Federal level, including as a Director, Vice-Chairman and Chairman of WAFIC, was a member of the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee and an inaugural Director of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority.

Guy Westbrook

Vice Chairman

 Guy Westbrook started his working career 1980 as a teacher of children with mental and physical disabilities.  In 1986/87 he returned to study at the Tasmania State Institute of Technology's Key Centre for Aquaculture before starting a career in the Tasmanian Salmon Industry.

After working for two smaller companies he spent 12 years as Group Operations Manager with Nortas Pty Ltd through a period of major growth, and then moved to Tassal Group for two years as Projects Manager during a period of major industry restructure.  After a brief period of self employment he moved to Broome to develop the Barramundi operations of Marine Produce Australia Limited.  Since 1988 he has worked in all facets of freshwater and marine production of Atlantic Salmon, Rainbow Trout and Barramundi, serving on many industry development and research advisory groups over that time.

Guy's goal is to see WA develop sustainable aquaculture industries that compete both on both domestic and international markets.

Sue Harris

After many years in the health industry Sue joined the aquaculture industry four years ago when her husband moved to the country to develop a Marron Farm.  Production and sales are now well under way with more ponds being developed this summer. Sue is the appointed Secretary of the Marron Growers Association for the second year in a row.  While being new to the industry of Aquaculture passion and enjoyment of her new life make up for being the ‘new girl on the block'.

Dr Suresh Job

Dr Suresh Job has 20 years of experience with aquaculture, marine conservation, and enterprise development and training in remote and regional communities. His experience encompasses scientific research, industry development, business management, and capacity building in indigenous communities. Dr Job has a strong interest in fish disease management, marine ornamentals and sub-tropical foodfish species.

Prof. Bruce Phillips

Currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Environmental Biology at Curtin University of Technology in Western Australia.  From 1992-1996 was the Chief Scientist with the AFMA and was involved in developing a research program for all Commonwealth managed fisheries, including trawl fisheries, finfish, sharks, tuna and prawns.  Prior to this he spent 28 years as s scientist with the CSIRO studying lobster ecology.

Barry Hall

Since 1997 Barry investigated proposals for mariculture along the south coast of WA.

As Managing Director of Bayside Abalone he developed Western Australia's first commercial abalone farm at Bremer Bay until its recent sale to WA Abalone Ltd which resulted in Bayside being the major shareholder of the combined operations.

Barry has instigated several research projects to greatly benefit the abalone industry including the successful Brownlip/Greenlip hybrid program and other completely new "grow out" practices.  Current commitments are focused on mariculture fish farming in WA to offset the current reduction in wild catch quotas and as construction consultant on several overseas RAS projects.

Barry Hall & Associates was a long established architectural practice from 1976 to 1997.
