Greg Jenkins

Independent Director

Greg has worked in the Australian aquaculture industry sector since 1981.

After gaining a Bachelor of Marine Science at the University of NSW, Greg was employed as Research Biologist for two pilot farms for freshwater prawns in far north Queensland and in the Kimberley,   for Nor-West Seafoods in Shark Bay and as Hatchery Manager for Southern Seafarms investigating the aquaculture potential for Mahimahi.

Greg led the development of the Centre for Applied Aquaculture Research (ACAAR) from its inception in 1991. ACAAR is now one of Australia’s leading aquaculture research organisations.

Greg was then DPIRD’s Director of Aquaculture R&D from 2018 until his retirement in early November 2024.

Greg has been recognised by a number of awards:

  • Recfish Australia Award for ‘The Best Recreational Enhancement Project’ in 2006
  • Micheal Kailis Leadership Award in 2015
  • Inducted into the Australian Seafood Hall of Fame in 2019.

 

Greg was active in a range of industry groups in his 43 year aquaculture career:

  • Board Member of the Aquaculture Council of WA (13 years incl. 7 years Vice-Chair).
  • Founding Board member/Secretary/Treasurer of the WA Marine Fishfarming Association (12 years).
  • Founding Board member of the WA Fish Foundation (6 years).
  • Member of the WA Fisheries Research Advisory Board (7 years).
  • Board Member of the Aquaculture Development Council of WA (5 years).
  • Member WA Fisheries Habitat Enhancement Structures Scientific Reference Group (2 years).
  • Member International Organising Committee for the International Symposium for Restocking and Sea Ranching ( 6 years).
  • Member Australian Conservation Foundation’s Sustainable Seafood Program (5 years).
  • Member of the WA Abalone Aquaculture Association (9 years).
  • Member of the WA Department of Training and Employment’s Science and Technology Innovation Strategy Management Committee (4 years).
  • Member of the National Steering Committee for Inland Saline Aquaculture (3 years).
  • Chair of the WA Sustainable Development of Marine Fishfarming Forum (2 years).
  • Member of the Aquaculture Bill Taskforce 2007 – 2008.
  • Co-Chair of the Open Ocean Aquaculture session at the 2008 Australasian Aquaculture Conference in Brisbane in August 2008.
