Jonathan is the operator of the Albany Shellfish Hatchery and has been since its’ commissioning in 2017.
He has been involved in oyster hatchery production over the last 35 years in Tasmania, New Zealand and WA. He has produced a wide range of bivalve shellfish.
Jonathan arrived in WA from Tasmania in 1992 and refitted the existing Albany oyster hatchery, becoming one of the first successful and reliable rock oyster hatcheries in the country.
During an 8 year stint in NZ, he built a dedicated mussel hatchery and pioneered commercial scale hatchery production of the NZ Greenshell Mussel.
Returning to Albany 10 years ago he recommissioned the old mothballed hatchery and began producing spat of a few different species. Along with ACWA and a number of the industry stalwarts government funding was sought for a dedicated multi-species shellfish hatchery to underpin the development of a shellfish industry in WA. The new hatchery began producing in 2018. The Albany Shellfish Hatchery continues to expand its capacity and output.
